There are two magnets under the spinning cap of the anemometer. Every half rotation a magnet passes over a small reed switch that is then connected to a Wind Data Logger. The anemometer is built using high quality ball bearings, stainless steel hardware, and the distinctive gold anodized aluminum cups.
Most anemometers are exposed to harsh conditions, thus they will not last forever. In most cases the anemometer will last for two to three years without maintenance. The only parts that APRS World have seen die in the last 10 years are the ball bearings. Replacement ball bearing assemblies are available, at cost, and can be installed in a few minutes with hand tools.
Supplied as a kit for ease of shipping. Assembly of the anemometer is not difficult and will take most people less than an hour to complete. The bearings and magnets are pre-epoxied in place and a packet of Loctite 222 is included. A flat blade screw driver and end wrenches are the only tools required.
The anemometer has an RJ-45 connector in the base to make field wiring very easy. To connect the anemometer to a Wind Data Logger, all you need is a straight through CAT5 patch cable.
Note: the base is US 1.5" PVC and is approx. 48.5mm O.D. and 40mm I.D.
